REDWOOD NATIONAL FOREST AND STATE PARKS
The Redwood Forest of the United States is just amazing. Their natural range covers almost 2 million acres, an irregular strip 5 to 35 miles wide and 450 miles long, along the Pacific Coast from Oregon into California. Known as the Titans of the Coast, you will be left in awe as you drive through or walk amongst these amazing trees. With the Tall Tree being one of the tallest trees measured, its crown sores more than 367 feet above the waters of Redwood Creek. And while these trees may live to be a thousand or more years, the average age is 500-700 years. The oldest known individual, that was felled long ago, was estimated to be more than 2,200 years old.
We flew from Houston to Portland, OR and rented a car then drove the coast making our way south to fly back home out of San Francisco, CA. The drive along the coast is beautiful with many places to stop along the way. Remember, there are also state parks within the Redwood National Park. So make sure to search those out and visit as well! Along the drive, there are three trees that you can drive through. The Tour Thru Tree, The Shrine Drive-Thru Tree and The Chandelier Tree. I do advise to use caution when doing this. We did drive through two of the three, as the Shrine tree just looked way to narrow for the rental car we had. So we skipped trying that one. But they are fun to visit and we had no crowds or lines. The Tour and Shrine trees are on the honor system of paying but the Chandelier does have a pay booth and there is also a great little gift shop.
*See Fern Canyon & Gold Bluffs Beach to add to this trip!
